Integrating Reading into Commercially-Produced Science Kits

This session focuses on integrating reading materials into hands-on science kits for the purpose of facilitating the scientific observations of 8-9 year old children during their hands-on investigations. We will provide opportunities to examine student work that shows how children describe their observations prior to modification of the unit with text-based materials. We will also share student work that shows how children's descriptions of their observations changed when given the opportunity to read and talk about scientific ideas that could better guide their observations.
